Nome was formaly founded in 1898 when gold was discovered. Thousands of “ninety-eighters” came looking for there fortune. The settlers brought schools, technology, steam trains, supplies and churches.
Mail delivery was impossible by horse, but very successful by dog sled. The very well-know Iditarod Dog Sled Race began on the an inland trail during the gold-rush. The finish line was moved to Nome in 1973. The race is 1150 miles and takes 9 -12 days to complete.
